A NEW crossing of Knutsford Road for pedestrians and cyclists is set to be introduced.

It will be close to the swing bridge over the Manchester Shop Canal and has been suggested to help the extra numbers of people using the Trans Pennine Trail.

The toucan crossing will be 10 metres north of the bridge.

A council spokesman said: "Due to the Trans Pennine Trail crossing just north of the Manchester Ship Canal swing bridge and the increased footfall required for the route due to the limited canal crossing points in the area it has been highlighted that a controlled crossing is required as close to the Trans Pennine Trail alignment as possible.

"With pedal cyclists also using the route it was agreed that any crossing provision should include assistance for cyclists.

"The package of improvements identified the need for the construction of a new toucan crossing on Knutsford Road to assist and encourage additional pedestrians and cyclist trips to across the bridge between Latchford and Stockton Heath and on the Trans Pennine Trail."

Any comments on the plans must be submitted to the council by January 7.
